Licenses and sources
This page lists only what Biblup uses from others: the Bibles, the context works, the links between passages, the audio voice and the typography. For each work you see the edition, the license, what we do with it and the credit it requires. When all we have is the distributor's own declaration, we say so.
Bible texts
One edition is the base of the stories; two appear beside the English text, depending on your language.
World English Bible (WEB)Protestant, 2020 stable text edition (engwebp)
- License:
- Public domain (declared by the distributor)
- What Biblup does:
- It is the English text of the stories and the verse that closes each one, shown as the edition writes it. Biblup's stories are adaptations for people learning English: they are not the WEB and do not use its name.
- What we know:
- Public domain, according to eBible.org, which distributes the edition. This is the distributor's declaration, not legal advice. “World English Bible” is a trademark of eBible.org: a changed text should not use that name.

Bíblia Livre (BLIVRE)porbr2018 (2018)
- License:
- CC BY 4.0
- What Biblup does:
- It is the text beside the English for people who use Biblup in Portuguese. We show the text without changing the words; we only align the verse numbering with the WEB's.
- What we know:
- CC BY 4.0, according to the edition page on eBible.org, where the package we use comes from. The project's original site shows, on a credits page with 2017 text, the CC BY 3.0 Brazil license. Both ask that the authors, the source and the license be cited, and we follow the credit suggested in the edition we use. This is the distributor's declaration, not legal advice.

- License:
- Public domain (declared by the distributor)
- What Biblup does:
- It is the text beside the English for people who use Biblup in Spanish. We show the text without changing the words; it is a 2026 edition in plain, modern Spanish.
- What we know:
- Public domain, according to the edition page on eBible.org and the rights file inside the package (“Public Domain”, checked on October 15, 2026). This is the distributor's declaration, not legal advice. An older edition page cited CC BY 4.0 (© AudioBiblia.org / Irma Flores); the current page and the 2026 package declare public domain.

Context for the stories
The notes and articles behind the Context cards in the lessons and on the story pages.
Tyndale Open Study NotesTyndale House Publishers, 2023
- License:
- CC BY-SA 4.0
- What Biblup does:
- The basis of several Context cards: the place, the time, the customs and the names in a passage. We take one fact from the note and rewrite it in plain English, one fact per card; the card names the work and the license. The card text is Biblup's adaptation, not the original note.
- What we know:
- CC BY-SA 4.0, according to the page of the Tyndale Open Resources project, which distributes the notes (“Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License”). This is the distributor's declaration, not legal advice. The license asks for credit and for adaptations to carry the same license: the credit is below, and the cards made from the notes carry the same license.

WikipediaEnglish Wikipedia, articles read at a fixed revision (permalink)
- License:
- CC BY-SA 4.0
- What Biblup does:
- Fills in the Context cards where the free works do not cover a subject. Each article is read at a fixed revision (permalink), and only one short fact is used, rewritten in plain English and cited on the card. It is the lowest-ranked source we use.
- What we know:
- CC BY-SA 4.0 and GFDL, according to the Wikimedia Foundation Terms of Use, which say that reusers may follow either license or both. We follow CC BY-SA 4.0. This is the distributor's declaration, not legal advice. Wikipedia is written by volunteers and changes all the time: that is why we fix the revision of each article. The license asks for credit and for adaptations to carry the same license.

The Jewish EncyclopediaIsidore Singer (ed.), Funk & Wagnalls, 1901–1906
- License:
- Public domain (declared by the distributor)
- What Biblup does:
- A source of short notes on the customs and daily life of the people of the Bible, such as bread and the blessing said over it, on the Context cards. It is a work from 1901–1906: we use only customs and facts, never absolute dates, archaeological finds or “what scholars think today”.
- What we know:
- Public domain, according to JewishEncyclopedia.com, which publishes the work (“public domain”). This is the distributor's declaration, not legal advice. The work is old and reflects the view of its time: that is why it supports only customs and facts, and never mistakes tradition for a historical event.

OpenBible.info — Bible Cross Referencescross-references.zip (12 Oct 2026)
- License:
- CC BY 4.0
- What Biblup does:
- It shows, below a verse and in the lesson's Help, other passages linked to it, with the text of the World English Bible. We use only the passage pairs and the votes in the file, and keep the most-voted links for each verse. It is read-only.
- What we know:
- CC BY, according to the OpenBible.info page, which distributes the data; it cites version 4.0 of the license. This is the distributor's declaration, not legal advice. The author says the data comes mainly from the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, which is in the public domain, and that the votes are from users. We use only the passage pairs and the votes: the Bible text shown does not come from there.

Audio
The voice that reads English aloud.
Piper — en_US-lessac-mediumen_US · medium
- What Biblup does:
- It reads the English of the lessons aloud. It is a synthetic voice, generated on Biblup's server with Piper, not the recording of a person.
- What we know:
- The Piper voices repository page carries an MIT license label for the repository; the model card of this voice (“lessac”) names no license for the model. The data it was trained on (Lessac Technologies and Voice Factory, published by the University of Edinburgh) is under a research license (“Research Licence Agreement”), separate and its own (the “Training data” link). This page does not say what that license allows and does not summarize its terms: read the text behind the link.

How we give credit
Five rules that apply to every work on this page.
Credits live here
The edition, license and credit of each work are on this page. The full credits are not repeated in the lessons: there, the Context card only names the work and the license of what it shows.
A “Credits” link beside the text
Where a Bible appears beside the English, the “Credits” link leads to the Bible versions page, with the edition, the license and the authors.
See the Bible versionsBible text is not altered
We show each Bible without changing the words. What we do is align the verse numbering with the WEB's.
What is ours carries our name
The stories, the exercises and the explanations are produced by Biblup to teach English. They are not the WEB or the other editions and do not use their names.
We say what we know
When the only basis is the license the distributor declares, we write “according to the distributor”. That is not legal advice and may change if the distributor changes its page.
Every page and license cited here was opened and read on the date shown for each work. Distributors can change their terms later: the date says when we checked.
Found a license problem?
If you are an author or rights holder, or you saw a wrong credit or a license that does not match, write to the address below with the name of the work and the page where you saw it. If the problem is valid, we fix the credit or take down the affected piece.
